“The Learning Institute /Instituto de Aprendizaje“ is a multi-generational pilot program to link adult literacy learning with facilitated parent engagement opportunities. Participation will promote positive relationships within and between families, between parents and educators, and among local service organizations to strengthen individual and community assets for family success!
CIS Chatham County (CIS CC) and Chatham County Literacy(CL) staff will collaboratively provide a group of 20 Siler City parents with a range of literacy services linked with an array of free and accessible multi-generational educational activities for all ages. Adult participants will be recruited by CIS Student Support Specialists from a pool of families who have at least one child (grades K to 8) receiving CIS CC case managed services in Chatham Middle School or Virginia Cross Elementary this year.
A CIS Project Coordinator will manage participant communications, activity planning, and evaluation data collection. Chatham Literacy will provide parent applicants with initial baseline literacy assessments, ongoing support to select learning activities and goals, and group or individual instruction provided by volunteers. All participants will receive soft skills training. Other literacy service choices include: reading, writing, basic math, computer literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages Learning (ESOL), preparation for high school equivalency and citizenship classes.
