In my role, I encounter students who have undergone significant adversities in their lives, which would likely result in high scores on an ACE test (Adverse Childhood Experiences test). Often, we tend to make assumptions about their situations and rush to devise plans to “fix” them without first engaging in meaningful conversations or getting to know them. Jasiyah is one such student, though her presence is unmistakable. She is a vibrant, beautiful young girl who, despite facing her own challenges, still harbors dreams and stories within her.

Jasiyah once confided in me that she dreaded coming to school because she felt unacknowledged and disconnected from others. This sentiment might stem from her experiences both within and outside the school environment, but it was her reality nonetheless. Consequently, she would intentionally miss the bus, engage in arguments with her mother about attending school, or even get into trouble just to avoid feeling isolated.

Throughout this school year, I have had the privilege of working closely with Jasiyah as her Check and Connect Mentor. We meet weekly, ensuring both of us are present, to discuss her academic progress and overall well-being. During these sessions, she opens up about her joys, frustrations, the typical drama of sixth grade, and even aspects of her life she doesn’t usually share. With each meeting, we deepen our understanding of each other.

The turning point in my relationship with Jasiyah occurred within a single week. Firstly, she expressed that she now finds some enjoyment in attending school and is motivated to improve. She admitted to missing our conversations on days we don’t meet and even joked about skipping school if I’m absent—an astonishing transformation from the girl I first encountered at the start of the year! Later that week, when I corresponded with her mother, she revealed that Jasiyah frequently talks about me at home, and both her mother and stepfather appreciate the support I provide. This acknowledgment was significant to me, considering the hardships the family has endured in recent years. Their willingness to entrust Jasiyah to me speaks volumes, given the challenges they’ve faced and the trust they’ve had to rebuild. It also speaks to the pivotal role Communities In Schools Chatham County plays in the lives of students and families throughout our community.
