This week, we’re aiming to raise $5,000 in just 5 days to give students the tools, support, and opportunities they deserve as we kick off the 2025-2026 school year Tuesday, August, 26th.

Today, we’re highlighting the fifth of our Five Basics:

A Chance to Give Back to Peers and Community

We believe that true success is not only measured by what students achieve, but also by what they learn and take forward. Our fifth basic—a chance to give back to peers and community—empowers young people to become leaders, advocates, and changemakers.

From mentoring younger students and volunteering in local projects, to supporting their schools through advocacy, alumni networking, and community events, we create opportunities for students to experience the power of service. Giving back builds confidence, strengthens connections, and inspires a lifelong commitment to building up those around us.

Many of you have followed along with Jy’Mir’s story (and met him at a CISCC event!). In 2015, as a 2nd grader at Virginia Cross Elementary, Jy’Mir met Tych, a Student Support Specialist with CIS Chatham County. What began as a simple connection grew into an enduring mentorship that shaped Jy’Mir’s journey. Through CISCC, he participated in enriching opportunities—from field trips and summer camps to the Cooking Matters for Teens program and even completing a multi-state cycling tour with Triangle Bike Works.

Now a proud CISCC alumnus, Jy’Mir enters his second year at North Carolina A&T after completing a summer internship with Labcorp in Hillsborough, NC. Beyond his academic achievements, he gives back by speaking at public events, and regularly offering motivation to his peers and community. This summer, Jy’Mir visited Barranquilla, Colombia, presenting to a University class, and then shared his experiences with four high school groups to encourage and motivate their continued education. He continues to seek opportunities to support his community— including potential future service on our Board of Directors!

His story reflects the heart of our mission: creating lifelong connections that empower students to thrive and give back to their peers and community.

From Reluctant Participant to Future Mentor

Recently, one of our Community Service & Restitution participants shared a powerful reflection on their journey through our restorative justice program.

When they first joined, they admitted their mindset was simple: “Just get it over with and move on.” They didn’t expect it to make any real difference in their life. But over time, something changed.

The experience and relationship that was developed offered space and time to reflect, build an understanding of the importance of good choices, taking responsibility for our actions, and making meaningful steps toward becoming the person they aspire to be. “It has radically changed my behavior for the better,” they shared. “I’m in a much better place than I was before.”

Now, after completing their restorative responsibilities, gaining independence and preparing for the next chapter in their life, they want to give back—sharing they look forward to being a support for others walking a similar path facing life’s obstacles and challenges.

Stories like this give us hope and purpose in our mission to surround Chatham County students with a network of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Creating a generational ripple of positive impact for each other and our community.

This week, we are seeking to raise $5,000 in 5 days to support our work in local schools.
