Each week this December, we have been sharing stories from students, staff, and volunteers about the impact our relationships have with students and families in Chatham County. This week, we are sharing some thoughts from our students on how being present with them has made a difference.
Katelyn – Jordan Matthews High School
I was failing my classes and really needed help. Someone suggested I talk to Mr. Travis, CISCC’s High School Success Coach, and that changed everything for me. He didn’t just help me improve my grades—he gave me a safe, supportive space to share my thoughts and get back on track.
With CISCC, I have a quiet, distraction-free place to work and always know help is available when I need it. Thanks to Mr. Travis and CISCC, I’m doing better in school and have the support I need to succeed.
Jy’Mir – Alumni, NC A&T Freshman
The one on one time I had with CISCC showed me what was achievable in my life. I’m not sure I would have thought about college, or majoring in computer science without the inspiration I received from CISCC. My mindset has been expanded, and I can see what is attainable because of the experiences I have had through this organization.

I have been helping prepare weekly food bag distributions (in partnership with the InterFaith Food Shuttle) for students who need additional resources for the weekends. We have distributed over 1,500 bags of food this fall. Recently, a student went out of his way to stop me in the hall and thank us for the food. He went on to share how much this meant to him and his family. It was a powerful moment for me to see the tangible impact we have in the lives of students and families.
Each week, we have the privilege of working with hundreds of students across Chatham County. In partnership with other organizations, volunteers, and Chatham County Schools, being present in these lives makes an impact and empowers students to stay in school and reach their full potential in life.
As we approach the End of Year, our Being Present Matters campaign is driving us toward a critical goal: raising an additional $100,000 to sustain our work through the school year.
Will you join us? By donating, volunteering, or spreading the word, you can help ensure every student in Chatham County has the support they need to thrive. Together, we can create lasting change and pave the way for a brighter future for our students.
Let’s make it happen—because being present truly matters.
