On Wednesday March 1 CIS CC held its second session of Cooking Matters for Teens at Chatham Middle School in Siler City.
Cooking Matters for Teens teaches teens how to make healthy food choices, meals and snacks for themselves, their families and friends. Participants learn to shop smarter and to use nutrition information to make healthier choices. Each lesson consists of approximately forty minutes of nutrition education, forty minutes of culinary prep and cooking, twenty minutes of eating together, and ten minutes of cleanup and wrap up discussion.
This year’s Cooking Matters program is facilitated by seven community volunteers, with food being donated by the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle in Raleigh. Fifteen participants were selected based on interest and need and are also enrolled in the CIS CC’s school-based program.
For over twenty years, Cooking Matters has empowered families with the skills to stretch their food budgets and cook healthy meals so their children get nutritious food at home. Research shows that this type of food resource management is an important component of reducing hunger and food insecurity.
The current Cooking Matters for Teens program meets weekly March 1st through April 5th. Participants who complete 5/6 weeks receive a certificate of completion, a cutting board, and reusable grocery bag.
